The Bikini for the Body—Not, the Body for the Bikini

When I was a little girl, around ten-to-twelve years old, I was so self conscious of my body, that I always wore a t-shirt over my bathing suit to hide my body. Even around my family! I often said I didn’t want to go swimming in the pool or ocean, when really, I did! It was just that I didn’t want to be seen in a bathing suit. And, you know what? I really missed out on a lot of fun and joy. All because I let insecurity control me. Thankfully, I’m no longer wearing t-shirts over my bathing suits, but I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I still struggle feeling confident in a bikini.

Have you been shopping for that summer bikini yet? Maybe, like me, you cringe at the very thought of it. Personally, every year I struggle to find a cute suit that is going to flatter my figure, make me feel both confident and comfortable, and fit the stage of life I’m in. While I recognize that I can no longer pull off some of the bikinis I used to wear in my college days (before having children and entering my 40s), that doesn’t mean I should have to settle for an unflattering one-piece with nothing built in to hold me up, or in, does it? (Ladies, you know what I’m talking about.)

Fortunately, this year, I’ve noticed that there are quite a few more companies selling options for women of all body shapes and sizes. 🙌🏻 Including some really cute one pieces! I was so excited a couple weeks ago when I came across this cute bikini @beachsissi! High waist, pretty pattern, trendy style, and amazing fit! Yay! (And no, I’m not a paid rep for them.)

Here’s the thing that I’m hoping you take away from all this: the bikini is meant to serve you, and bolster your confidence in the body that you have right now. (Not the body you want to have after losing those l0 extra COVID pounds.) You’re beautiful just the way you are! If a bathing suit isn’t fitting you right, it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. That suit is just not the one for you! Acknowledge that, and move on. Don’t waste your precious time, and emotional energy trying to make it work, when it’s not meant to be. This summer, find a suit that makes you feel confident. Don’t hide! Make the decision to enjoy your time at the beach, or the pool, in the sunshine with your family and friends.

“You’re beautiful from head to toe, my dear love, beautiful beyond compare, absolutely flawless” (Song of Solomon 4:6-7 MSG).
